Keep an eye out for the abundant wildlife in Port Macquarie. Whale watching season is in full swing and there's no better time to enjoy of the majestic beauty of these magnificent creatures.
Humpbacks are the most commonly spotted whales around the Port Macquarie coasts, with many whale pods passing through the area from July to October. Every year during this time, humpbacks travel north to breed and birth their calves.
During their migration, humpbacks put on an acrobatic display, breaching out of the water in spectacular glory. These creatures are enormous in size and their ability to leap to these extraordinary heights make the spectacle that much more impressive. Whales tend to very curious and intelligent creatures and will often approach a vessel and put on a "show" as the boat passes by.
A number of tour operators operate out of Port Macquarie throughout the whale watching season - with a money back guarantee if you don't see whale - it won't be hard to get a glimpse of a humpback in the area. You'll want to take your camera as these are some real not to miss moments!
Three operators - PortJet, Cruise Adventures and Port Venture - depart daily at various times. The best value is with PortJet’s ‘Unseasonably Good Deal’ which includes a whale-watching offer of ‘two adults for the price of one’, or just $55 for two people. This is a 1.5hour cruise on a fast jet-boat and can be taken until 30 September.
The Whale Song
One of the most unique features of the humpback is their hauntingly beautiful whale song. The songs are emitted by the males. The whale song was the inspiration behind this popular Optus campaign.
