Guulabaa – meaning “Place of Koala” in the local Gathang language – is a vibrant new tourism precinct nestled within Cowarra State Forest, just a short drive from Port Macquarie. This innovative destination has become the new home of the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital, which has relocated from its original site near Roto House to a purpose-built Wild Koala Breeding and Visitor Centre. Here, visitors can observe resident koalas like Nero, Casper, and Trish from elevated viewing decks, while learning about conservation efforts and the hospital’s pioneering breeding program.

Guulabaa is more than just a sanctuary for koalas – it’s a hub of cultural and natural experiences. The precinct features The Hub, an architect-designed series of timber decks that connect key attractions, including the Bunyah Local Aboriginal Land Council Café and the Bunyah Bilbay Cultural Centre, which showcases Aboriginal art and offers insights into Biripi Country.

Port Macquarie is also home to Koala Conservation Australia (KCA), of which the Koala Hospital is part. It’s a not-for-profit charity funded by the public through donations and bequests, the Adopt A Wild Koala Program and souvenir shop sales. KCA, in partnership with Forestry, will be opening the world’s first wild Koala breeding facility called ‘Guulabaa’ in 2023. The project is coming along well, and includes a breeding facility, an education centre, and a café and art gallery run by our Bunya Local Land Council. Also in the precinct is Wildnets (Australia’s largest suspended playground- already open), and the Big Koala (open to view).
